BAD BLOOD

What causes a person to be a sociopath? Is it a genetic disorder, or is it caused by the environment in which he is raised? While no one knows for certain, it is probable that sociopathy has a multifactorial etiology. Studies have demonstrated that approximately 20% of a sociopath's first-degree relatives are also anti-social. There is also a high association with alcoholism in families of sociopaths. Because the home life of families with anti-social parents is often dysfunctional, it is difficult to separate out the influence of inherited predisposition from the influence of a dysfunctional home.[50] There is a clear demonstrable tendency to alcoholism and/or illicit drug use in sociopathy. As many as 75% of sociopaths have early and persistent dependency on alcohol, and up to 50% of sociopaths demonstrate abuse of other substances. "This exacerbates other symptoms associated with ASP (anti-social personality disorder), often bringing out the worst in an individual's behavior."[51]

There is a definite gender predilection, with the male to female ratio ranging from 4-7.8 to 1.[52] It is postulated that while the genetic factors which predispose a person to psychopathy is similar between men and women, the environmental factors may differ, helping to explain why psychopathy is far more common in men. A study by Cloninger et al[53] found more relatives with criminal activity in female psychopaths, suggesting that women may have a higher threshold before exposure to antisocial behavior affects their own development of aberrant behavior. This may be due to gender-role differentiation or perhaps the effects of androgenation.

I had met Adrian's parents on only a few occasions. Adrian himself characterized them to me as "poorly socialized." They were uncomfortable even going out to eat in a restaurant and seemed to keep largely to themselves. Adrian also told me that his mother had been married briefly before she married his father. He told me that she was ashamed of this fact and not to let her know that I knew. He intimated that this man, his mother's first husband, had some behavioral/ personality problems. Adrian had an older half-sister as a product of this marriage. He told me that when he was a baby, this half-sister attacked him with a pair of scissors, lacerating his genitalia. He also told stories of mental and physical abuse by this sister during his childhood that sounded far worse than just the usual sibling strife. Adrian's younger, full biological sister also had what appeared to me to be her share of “issues." According to Adrian, she had already been married three or four times. During the time that I was married to Adrian, she was unemployed and did not appear to be actively seeking a new job. She had begun to meet men on the same millionaire internet dating website on which I had unfortunately met Adrian and would move in with a series of these men and let them support her.

Adrian and his family did not seem to have the strong emotional ties that I associate with being in a family.
